Parents Behaving Badly at a First Holy Communion

First Communion is in full swing and thousands of young children are entering into what Catholic’s deem a very important step in their lives; receiving for the first time, the body and blood of Jesus Christ. While these children are taught the importance and significance of this event, I can only ask myself; do PARENTS understand the importance? I pose this question to my readers because this past Saturday I took part in my niece’s First Holy Communion and was completely horrified at the behavior of many of the families sitting inside the church. I would love to hear if any of you have experienced what I am about to tell you so please comment below if you have.

First, I come from a large Italian / Irish family and attended mass every Sunday while growing up and I was taught to be respectful of the church and observe good etiquette during the mass and if me or my siblings didn’t, we’d get the “look” from our parents and know that we were teetering on being punished once we walked outside. These teachings from my parents have served me well in conducting myself in an acceptable manner in many situations whether I’m entering into a church, a synagogue or any other house of worship. However I found myself scratching my head on Saturday wondering if my siblings and I were the only ones taught such things.

I’ll set the stage for you: The First Holy Communion mass was to begin at 11 a.m. so families were encouraged to get there early in order to get their children lined up and in order because there were 51 kids receiving communion that day so there was a lot to do. While assembling the children and providing last minute instructions, the noise / conversation level was so deafening that the catechism teacher had to PLEAD three times for the congregation to be quiet because the children were not able to hear the instructions. The “family” sitting behind ours, were quite annoyed by this plea and called the teacher NASTY! Really? This woman is trying to prepare YOUR child for an important moment in his/her life and because you can’t or won’t keep quiet, she’s the nasty one? This same family THROUGHOUT the entire mass continued to talk, curse at each other and speak on their cell phone. I was dumbfounded.

After multiple pleas to quiet down, went ignored, the priest had to finally get involved and request the attendees to stop talking. However, even when the priest walked in, attendees continued to “chat.” I couldn’t believe it and I honestly think the priest was perplexed at the behavior.

As the mass continued and the children received the host for the first time, the families were then invited to come up and receive the host as well but I honestly think for many that this was probably the first time these parents had actually received the host because some did not know what to do with it once it was placed in their hand! At one point, the priest had to run down the aisle after a woman to inform her that she had to place it in her mouth!? Is this the example one will set for their children? Did they not participate in their child’s preparation for that day? Did they not ever take them to mass up to this point? Will they take them to mass AFTER this day? I don’t say this in judgment but if I don’t understand that if a parent is going to go through the lengths of having their child receive First Holy Communion shouldn’t you set an example for them?

As an image and style consultant, I have a better understanding of appropriate attire for certain occasions so I’m willing to acknowledge that at times some people get it wrong. However, when you walk into a church and you are celebrating a child’s First Holy Communion why would one think it’s appropriate to wear micro mini skirts, plunging and revealing necklines, shorts, sneakers and baseball hats? In other cultures, one is not allowed into a house of worship unless they are covered up completely so why would one think it acceptable to walk into a church dressed in a suggestive manner? Children follow our lead, they look to us for guidance and it’s important to lead by example.

Here are a few basic etiquette reminders:

- Keep the cell phone off and that includes the vibrate and texting options.
- Refrain from using inappropriate language before, during or after mass.
- Refrain from chatting during the mass; it’s one hour and unless there is an emergency of some sort, have the conversation AFTER mass.
- Dress appropriate which means: no flip flips, sneakers, mini skirts, bare shoulders, bare midriffs, backless anything, revealing tops and baseball hats!

I only hope that my experience was unique and that this is not happening nationwide.

The purrfect heel; kitten heel!

While many style sites and magazines are touting the fact that “kitten heels” are back, I can only say that they have never left. Kitten heels are a classic and although today’s styles have been updated, they have and will continue to be a crowd pleaser amongst most women.

The kitten heel is defined as a heel height between 1.5” to 2” with slight curve setting the heel in from the edge of the shoe which make this heel more manageable and comfortable for women.

How do you wear them? Quite easily. However, keep in mind that the shoe itself projects a very sophisticated and elegant image so I would not pair them with a micro mini or short dress.

Who can wear them? Everyone! Yes, this heel can be worn by anyone. However, for the petite flower (and this includes me) I would suggest opting for the higher heel with a pointed toe since this will elongate the leg and make you appear taller. Lastly, be sure to avoid ankle or cross straps as well as a round toe because it will shorten the length of your leg. As for the fuller figure gal, it’s important to select an option that helps balance your overall figure. Avoid wearing a super tiny heel but instead opt for a thicker heel.

5 Tips to Get & Keep the Job You Want

The US Labor of Statistics recently issued a statistic that predicts every American worker will change “careers” – not jobs but careers, at least 3x throughout the course of his or her professional life. This statistic proves there is a whole new career landscape out there and we need to learn how to navigate through it. These 5 tips will help you do just that!

1. DO be flexible & adaptable / Don’t hold on to the “dream” job syndrome

Many companies are thinking outside the box on how to hire and maintain the right employee so it’s behooves the professional to be open to new opportunities, challenges and changes in the workforce landscape. For example, if you are offered a part-time job in the field you want to stay in, take it. While it might not be the ideal situation, you are one step closer to illustrating your talent and it's a matter of time before you are recognized for your flexibility and willingness to adapt.

2. DO dress the part at all times / DON'T get comfortable

Remember the old saying, "Dress for the job you want?" Well that still holds true today and is relevant Monday – Friday! Companies more than ever, want to project a professional and established image at all times so it’s essential for the employee to continue wearing appropriate attire beyond the initial interview. Casual Friday’s are falling by the wayside.

3. DO elevate the conversation / DON'T ramble

Whether you are interviewing or have been hired, when engaged in conversations or meetings with key stakeholders, always elevate the discussion so that they see and know you are interested in what is going on within the company. If you bump into your CEO and he/she asks how things are going, he doesn't want to know about your evening plans, he wants the 3 minute elevator pitch on how you think the business is going. This holds true for the interviewer as well. Be sure to prepare your elevator pitch so when asked “why should we hire you?” you will have a pointed and articulate response.

4. DO network; in and out of the office / DON'T get personal

Build relationships with people outside of your current business unit and begin to learn all areas of the business (sales, marketing, finance). This will help round out your knowledge of the company and provide insight into other potential career opportunities. Keep conversations on a professional level versus divulging private or personal information.

5. DO be self-aware / DON'T ignore reactions

Self-aware is defined as “aware of oneself, including one's traits, feelings, and behaviors.” Having the ability to understand how your overall image and behavior is being perceived provides an opportunity to change the dynamic of a meeting or situation. You have to factor in how you speak – are you saying lots of “um’s” , Are you fidgeting? “Is your voice quivering from nerves? How is your diction? Are you enunciating clearly? Being aware of your body language will also help you understand the image you are projecting. For example, avoid crossing your arms since this projects defiance, keep good eye contact and don't look down. Looking down or away from person you are speaking with could be perceived as being dishonest or that you have something to hide.

Sip, Shop & Swap – Fun had by all!

This season’s Spring Frock Swap was a bit of departure from our previous swaps because this one was held in a beautiful winery. The Stoutridge Vineyard is 70 miles north of Manhattan and is a premium estate winery offering wonderful unprocessed wines. A must visit for anyone interested in wines or just looking to take a fun day trip.

The wine tastings paired with “guilt-free” shopping turned out to be a wonderful combination! One woman left with 4 pair of never worn shoes and 7 “new” clothing items to add her wardrobe. She left saying “Wow, I can really tell my husband that I didn’t spend any money shopping today!”

The Frock Swap continues to be a community driven event; everything from soliciting volunteers from Marist College as well as Ulster BOCES, purchasing food items through the local grocery stores to (and most importantly) donating the remaining items to the wonderful non-profit organization, The Grace Smith House. In addition to donating the clothes, we conduct a post-swap image workshop to the courageous women seeking shelter at the Grace Smith House.

Swapping brings communities closer together by reminding us all that even though we might be done with something we have, someone else may really treasure it. The idea of reaching out to our neighbors to pool everyone’s resources and make everyone’s lives easier can be forgotten in an economic climate where everyone is so focused on making sure they’re able to cover their bills and keep their families happy. Frock Swaps are way to help remind us of the importance of communicating with our neighbors in a fun, spirited and productive way.

According to Pantone (renowned color authority and trend tracker for fashion & home-decor industries) names Turquoise as the color of the year 2010!

Many meanings of the color Turquoise have been published but the common theme / meaning is that this color creates emotional balance and stability. I personally chose this color for logo and repeated it on my website for this very meaning.

Listen up ladies, this is one of the universally flattering colors for all individuals so whether you have warm or cool undertones, this color will look fabulous on you!

A little tip: If you want to add brightness to your face, opt to wear a turquoise scarf. Talk about face brightening!

7 Tips on Cubicle Etiquette

Tips on how NOT to alienate your co-workers

Before I took the leap into the entrepreneurial world and started my own business, I worked in the fascinating world of technology. I say “fascinating” because there are truly very interesting, highly intellectual and well, “fascinating” people in this industry. Along with these characteristics comes a bit of eccentricity within each person and this was revealed to me on a daily basis in “cube world.”

There are all sorts of etiquette lessons on everything from appropriate dining to email communication to a hand shaking but rarely do I see anything written that highlights the etiquette of sitting in a cubicle. So, based on my profession as an image consultant and years of experience sitting in a cube, here are my do’s and don’ts to be a better cube mate. Would love to hear what your tips or pet peeves are? 1. Don’t pump up the volume on your PC or laptop while listening to music, a webinar or funny video that was forwarded to you.

Do use headphones so that you are not distracting to those sitting around you. It’s important to understand that your co-workers might be on an important call conducting business.

2. Don’t come to the office looking unkempt, unclean or exuding an offensive odor.

Do pay attention to good hygiene. Hygiene is usually covered in the company dress code guidelines so if you are not sure how this applies to you, ask your human resource person for a copy. However, from my experience this can include but not limited to: opting to not shower, avoiding deodorant, mouthwash or appropriate laundering of apparel. Additionally, clipping of nails whether it’s fingernails or toenails is NOT acceptable. And yes, I did have a cube mate think it was OK to clip his toenails during office hours.

3. Don’t make unnecessary noises and by “noises” I am referring to passing gas, belching or plain old tapping on your desk.

As for the “do” here, I don’t think I need to elaborate.

4. Don’t put your feet up on the furniture (i.e., desk). If we weren’t allowed to do it at home, we shouldn’t expect to do it at the office. I personally never enjoyed viewing the dirty soles of my cube mate.

Do invest in a foot rest. Some individuals may need to keep their feet elevated during the day so this would be a good option.

5. Don’t remove your shoes. While other cultures might require shoes to be removed as soon as you enter a dwelling, here in the office world, this is a no-no.

Do keep your shoes on at all times. You might get an unexpected visit from a senior manager and while you scramble to put your shoes back on, you’ve already made a negative impression.

6. Don’t shout across the floor. I was taught that if I shouted to someone located in another room, this was considered bad manners so I wasn’t allowed to do it.

Do engage in conversation with your co-workers but opt to use a meeting space or common area that will allow you to speak more freely and openly.

7. Don’t lunch loudly. Often there isn’t enough time in the day to get work done let alone take an hour for lunch so it’s common for one to eat at their desk. If this is the case, please remember what your parents taught you which is; don’t eat with your mouth open.

Do try to eat your lunch in the designed cafeteria so that are you not distracting those around your cube. Additionally, if you opt to eat at your cube, remember to throw out your lunch packing in the cafeteria. There is nothing more nauseating than lunch remains after a few hours.

5 Tips to Get You to Round 2

I was recently invited to help out my esteemed image colleagues, Catherine Schuller and Judith Ann Graham at a Job Fair in midtown Manhattan. No, we were not accepting job applications but instead providing image, resume and communication tips for those individuals seeking employment. With a 10% unemployment rate the competition is fierce so it’s our mission to help job seekers present a polished and professional image that will get them hired.

I’m writing this blog because to be honest, I was a bit surprised (ok well horrified) at how ill prepared some of these job seekers were. Everything from their attire, body language, and resumes screamed “I am just not into this!”

Attention Job Fair Attendees: It IS an interview and a very important one! It is your first contact with the company and could be your last.

1. Turn the cell phone/blackberry OFF and be “present!”
I watched a woman waiting on line to speak with a potential employer, talking loudly on her phone. Not only was she disrupting the others on the line whom were probably trying to mentally prepare themselves for their interview, but she was saying to the potential employer “I have other things to do today.” Really? The only thing that you should be communicating to all the employers in that room is “There is nothing more important than being here today and getting hired!”

2. Leave apathy at the door and bring enthusiasm into the room!
I stole the apathy part from my colleague Judith Graham and realized how right she is. Yes, many Americans are struggling right now and millions have been unemployed for quite some time BUT here’s your opportunity to get employed! Bring solutions to the table, not problems. Don’t walk into the job fair as if you are tired of doing this “gig” because chances are, the person that exudes energy, enthusiasm and a desire to be there will get through to round 2 and you won’t.

3. Dress up because it IS an interview
The same woman I mentioned above chatting loudly on her cell phone, thought it appropriate to wear a long sleeve rocker type t-shirt paired with jeans a few sizes to small and Ugg Boots. Do you think an employer will say “wow, this is a great candidate, she’s definitely making it to round 2?!” I think NOT. She could encompass all the qualities and skills they are looking for but her “attitude” and “attire” will only get her standing on line at the next Job Fair. Get your suit tailored, shoes polished, hair, make up and nails done, and for men, if you must have facial hair, keep it well groomed. If you are a smoker, PLEASE refrain from smoking until AFTER the job fair. Lastly, there is no need to have a cocktail prior to your "interview" so please refrain from this as well!

4. Practice your pitch
Your sole purpose at a job fair is to sell your skill set so that you differentiate yourself from all other candidates in that room that are vying for the same job. You have a very short window to do this (many people waiting on line) so practice your pitch. Know the answer when asked “why would I hire you” or better yet, don’t wait until you are asked, tell the interviewer when you meet him/her why you would be the best candidate for the job.

5. Your image encompasses your resume
Please have a professional review and critique your resume. Trust me, whatever the cost; it will be well worth it. If you don’t have an email address, get one; they are FREE! When you open up the account, do not pick a funny email address like freakygirl@aol.com or freakyboy@aol.com; simply use your name! Also, when you print your resume, print it on heavy stock paper not ordinary printer paper. Your resume is a leave behind so make sure it gets passed on in the organization and not thrown in the recycle bin.

Holiday Office Party - Do's and Don'ts

Just like casual Fridays have presented challenges and confusion to organizations and employees (mainly due to the loose interpretations of the word “casual”) office party attire and behavior is in the same league. While we all look forward to the holiday cheer, we often experience some angst when we have to try and figure out what is considered appropriate and what is not when attending the office holiday party. Here are a few guidelines to make the thought process a bit easier.

Women should avoid plunging necklines, sheer tops, and clingy inexpensive fabrics that are too form fitting. Instead, opt for a chic pant or skirt suit or dress that you can wear during office hours but easily transform to an evening look by wearing a bold necklace or chandelier earrings with a great clutch (these items can be kept in your day bag). Accessories are the best way to take someone from day to night. Hemlines for skirts or dresses should hit just at the knee or a touch below.

While men seem to have it a little easier when it comes to the selection of appropriate work attire, they must remember that the office holiday party is still a “work” function and not a weekend outing. If the company dress code is more casual, men should opt to dress up for the event and wear dark colored trousers paired with a button down shirt and laced up shoes. If the company dress code is suit and tie, then the thinking is taken out of the equation. However, men might want to opt for a more festive cuff link or tie to celebrate the occasion.

Whether you are a male or female, the number one “no no” to keep in mind when attending a holiday office party, is to not drink in excess and appear to be inebriated. This is definitely a career limiting move. The second “no no” is gossiping. Keep your comments and opinions to yourself. It is imperative to present your best self in all life’s endeavors and yes that means the holiday office party!

How it works
The process is straightforward… you bring your fashion items that you are ready to part with and simply swap them for something else that is more fabulous for you! A few simple rules
1. In order to join the swap, you must bring at least one good "saleable" fashion item.
2. For each item you bring, you get to swap for another.
3. Apparel should be in good “saleable” condition, cleaned, ironed and on hangers (stained or damaged, unwashed, dog / cat hair covered items will not be accepted)!
4. Sleepwear, undergarments, hosiery & questionable “lounge wear” will NOT be accepted.
5. Any leftover items will be donated to The Grace Institute, a non-profit for women.

The process is straightforward… you bring your fashion items that you are ready to part with and simply swap them for something else that is more fabulous for you! You can create new wardrobe combinations without spending a dime! I will be on hand to help you decide what’s fitting on your body and what’s not!

A few simple rules
1. In order to join the swap, you must bring at least one good saleable fashion item.

2. For each item you bring, you get to swap for another.

3. Apparel should be in good “saleable” condition, cleaned, ironed and on hangers (stained or damaged, unwashed, dog / cat hair covered items will not be accepted)!

4. Sleepwear, undergarments, hosiery and questionable “loungewear” will NOT be accepted.

5. Any leftover items will be donated to The Grace Smith House

6. Have fun and enjoy the new look you’ll leave with!

Women's 2009 Fall Fashion Roundup

It’s hard to believe that fall is officially one month away, particularly since summer weather didn’t kick in until late July. However, I must admit that I wait for fall with gleeful anticipation as it is my favorite season. I love all the rich warm colors, soft fabrics, and the option to layer with interesting accessories.

I will repeat my mantra as I always do when I report on the season’s trends: Before you head to the stores to start purchasing your new items, clear and clean out your closet to better understand what you REALLY need this season. Once you know what you need, make a list and be sure to take it with you when you head to the stores so you can shop smart.

Theme for Fall Trends

- 80’s Influence – I know many of you are cringing right now because this time period isn’t exactly known for fabulous fashions but rest assured there are only a few “themes” being adopted for this season: bold patterns, neon brights and leggings.

- Showing Shoulder – emphasizing the shoulder takes on many forms this season and one surprising way is the resurgence of shoulder pads! Shoulder pads are a great way to provide balance to the female silhouette. However, be careful with scale as you don’t want the shoulder to overwhelm your frame. In addition to the “strong” shoulder look, one shoulder dresses and tops are very fashion forward.

- Leather Love – much ado about leather this fall. Everything from bomber jackets, blazers, pants, leggings and sheath dresses, leather has found its way into almost every category.

- Architecturally Inspired Attire - strong powerful dressing is a key theme this season and a great way to illustrate this trend is through specific lines and points in clothing. I personally love this trend.

- Shimmer and Shine – metallics and sequins shine this season. Although metallics have been a popular trend for a few seasons, this fall, copper and gun metal are the new twist. Sequin also makes a comeback and is introduced as a daytime option. However, be sure to not wear sequins head to toe. It should be considered chic office wear NOT night club wear. Best way to wear this trend is to pair with a more conservative and layered look.

- Off the Chain – chains are everywhere! From accessories, to shoes, to apparel, chains are draped on everything this season.

- Color, Prints and Patterns – my favorite color red is big this season and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Other prominent colors this fall are beautiful rich jewel tones. Animal prints and plaid are also prevalent this fall.

This above trend list is designed to help guide you on what’s popular this season. Don’t become overwhelmed with trying to adopt ALL of them but instead take a few that you feel represent your unique style and incorporate into your wardrobe.

5 Tips to Monitor and Manage Your Online Presence

According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, there are 150 million users on Facebook today and 300 million expected by end of 2009. For the company, these stats are quite impressive but what are the implications for the users? The major implication I see is that our personal and professional lives are colliding on this much loved “social” community. With so many users, we are bound to “run into” people beyond our friend list.

While family and friends use this social media outlet to share and exchange stories, photos and updates, there is something else going on beyond just the personal exchange of information. What is it? Companies now realize that this is an invaluable source for pre-screening job applicants and they are actively perusing profiles to gain a better understanding of who you are and whether you would or would not be a good representation of their company brand or image. Can they do that? Yes and it happens often. In an interview with CBS, Tim DeMello, who owns the Internet company Ziggs, estimates that approximately 20% of companies are secretly scanning online profiles before they interview applicants. He goes on to say what they often find is shocking — including profiles that detail drug use, orgies and illegal behavior. This interview was done a few years back when we weren’t faced with such challenging economic times so the percentage of companies scanning online profiles has grown significantly.

As a user, you do have the ability to adjust privacy levels in order to limit the information seen but there is six degrees of separation in this community and you need to be aware that your FB friends and their friends can tag you in a photo and that photo might not put you in the best light. While the latter is harder to control, you can and should control what you chatter about and what photos you upload that would be considered inappropriate. Not clear on what would be considered “inappropriate?” Anything that would make your mother gasp in disbelief.

The following tips will help improve your chances of not only getting the interview but also avoiding the pink slip!

1. Pay heed to privacy – review your privacy settings for your profile, news and feed sections to see what is currently checked off. FB gives you various options: Everyone, My networks and Friends, Friends of Friends, or Only Friends. By selecting “Only Friends” you will be able to manage who sees what.

2. Post with prudence – you’ve heard the saying; a picture is worth a 1000 words, well bear this is in mind when you upload a photo. The saying stems from the fact that a viewer absorbs a lot of information very quickly and as a result makes “assumptions” very quickly. If a viewer sees a photo of you that he/she deems inappropriate, you have no chance to change their perception of you.

3. Profanity-proof your page - maintain acceptable language at all times. And for those friends that “post with passion” ask them nicely to refrain from doing so on your page.

4. Limit the 411 – don’t divulge your social calendar with references to any late night partying. Employers might assume that you’re not taking your job search or career seriously enough.

5. Communicate your cause – inform all your “friends” that you are either looking for a new job or that you want to excel in your current job so please run by any photos they might want to upload and tag you in that might be questionable. Additionally, have them refrain from making any references to past party experiences that you might have joined in and lastly, to please refrain from using profanity when posting to you. Unfortunately guilt by association is still very much in play.

I do not know who the author is so unfortunately I cannot give appropriate credit but I it's important to note that this is not original content from me. I just wanted to share with my readers.

HANDBOOK 2009

Health:

1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is
manufactured in plants.
4. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.
5. Make time to pray.
6. Play more games.
7. Read more books than you did in 2008.
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.
9. Sleep for 7 hours.
10. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile.

Personality:

Vintage Denim Done at Home

While some trends are worth investing in, some are not. This season's "vintage worn" denim look is one that can be easily replicated at home without spending a lot of money.

Stop by your local hardware store, Home Depot, or Lowes and pick up sand paper. All you need to do is rub the sandpaper on areas that you want to have that worn look and you are ready to go. If you want to take the worn look further and go for an authentic "tear" look, grab a cheese grater and vigorously rub where you want the tear to appear.

10 Budget Saving Tips to Achieve a Polished & Professional Image

1. Shop for fit, not size – for every U.S. size there is approximately 12 variations in that size and this does not take into account the variations in color dyes which can alter the size (some shrinkage can take place).

2. Practice the 80/20 rule - 20% of the clothes in your wardrobe are worn 80% of the time, so reverse this statistic and start wearing the other 80% that has been lying dormant in your closet. It will not only preserve your favorite pieces that you've been wearing repeatedly but also give you new options to wear.

3. Streamline your wardrobe - donate articles of clothing you know you will never wear again. This will help you see more clearly those items you forgot you had because you couldn't see everything.

4. Separate your suits - mix up your suits and use each piece as a separate ensemble. Pair your suit bottom with a sweater and a different textured type of jacket (i.e., leather or corduroy blazer). Alternatively, pair suit jacket with your denim jeans for a modern casual look.

5. Use friends & family – borrow or swap clothing and accessories with family or friends. This helps to inject new pieces into your wardrobe without spending any money.

6. Be kind to your feet - take footwear to get polished and if necessary, resoled. It is less expensive to get your shoes/boots fixed than to go out and buy a new pair.

7. Invest in new accessories - purchase scarves, handbags or fashion jewelry in the newest trends or colors to help keep you current and modern looking. Purchasing a few new accessories is less expensive than investing in a whole new outfit.

8. Care for your fabrics - don't feel the need to take everything to the dry cleaners all the time. Many dry cleaning solutions break down fabrics quickly. Be sure to immediately remove dry cleaner plastic wrap when the garment comes back from cleaners; leaving the plastic wrap on breaks down the garment's fabric more rapidly.

9. Imitation is the best form of flattery - get ideas about how to pull together outfits, colors, and patterns by taking notice of store mannequins or visiting retail websites.

10. Befriend your tailor - find a great tailor in your area and be sure to take any clothing to him/her for alterations. Proper fit is everything and you will look polished and professional at all times.

6 Must Know Etiquette Tips for the Traveler

There is no question as to whether or not travel has become increasingly challenging these days. With increased security measures, new regulations, and staff reductions due to the economic climate, traveling for either business or pleasure is now a very different experience for all of us. While we have no control over the aforementioned issues, we do have control over how we behave and interact with our fellow travelers so that we make the travel experience more tolerable and enjoyable.

For the Memorial Day holiday weekend, my husband planned a getaway to Bermuda for some rest and relaxation. The trip was for the most part relaxing but depending on your travel neighbor (airplane or hotel), it could turn out to be more stressful than relaxing. Here are a few etiquette tips to ensure we are the ideal travel neighbor in the air or on the land.

1. Don't be a barrier to entry - everyone has an assigned seat so why the mad dash to board the aircraft when your row has not even been called? As soon as the pre-boarding announcement is heard, travelers (not fitting into this category) stand up and block the way for those that need to pre-board such as children, disabled travelers, elderly travelers, etc. Recently, I watched an elderly man try to navigate his wheelchair bound wife through a crowd of travelers who were completely unaware of this man's attempt to board the plane safely and efficiently.

2. Don't arm wrestle - arm and leg room is getting smaller by the year as airlines try to increase the number of seats and rows in their planes and as a result our personal space is greatly invaded. However, it is not necessary to mark your territory by spreading out your elbows and taking up both armrests. Be kind and alternate when you can. The important thing to remember is that the plane arrives to the destination safely.

3. Do cover your mouth - with the Swine flu still very much a concern, I was surprised to see how often adults and children did not cover their mouth when sneezing. Even if the swine flu was not prevalent today, why are individuals not practicing this basic etiquette rule? The proper way to sneeze is to sneeze into your upper arm vs. your hand as the latter will immediately spread germs when you shake someone's hand.

4. Do use your "inside" voice - whether you (or your children) are on a plane or in a hotel, it's not necessary to shout. One morning while vacationing, we woke up to to a child gleefully shouting down the hotel hallway at 7:30 a.m. While 7:30 a.m. might not be considered early by some, please keep in mind that other travelers might have arrived late in the evening or even early in the morning and might be on a different time zone.

5. Mind your ashes - the sole purpose of an ashtray is provide a home for cigarette ashes. For some smokers, they don't feel the need to use one and instead flick their ashes wherever, not realizing where they might land. While in Bermuda, my husband and I had a lovely room with an outside garden patio overlooking Hamilton Harbour. We were quite excited to have our breakfast out there in such a beautiful setting so the next morning we ordered room service and planned to eat outside. However, when we opened the door there were ashes and cigarette butts strewn about including our bathing suits that we left out to dry the night before. Apparently the guests staying above us opted to not use the ashtray. If an ashtray is present whether in a hotel room, restaurant, bar, etc. please be kind to those around you and remember to use it.

6. Don't pump up the volume - the definition of a hotel is a "commercial establishment offering lodging to travelers and often having restaurants, meeting rooms, stores, etc., that are available to the general public". A hotel is not a traveler's home and as a result, different rules apply. Travelers are sharing space that is open to the general public. Music is a wonderful way to relax within the confines of your room but remember to keep the volume down so your neighbors don't have to feel the vibrations in their room!

The next time you travel, keep the above tips in mind so that you set a great example for all travelers.

Fun with Frocks

In my previous corporate life, I traveled extensively in U.S. and abroad but interestingly enough, I had never been to Beacon, NY prior to the Frock Swap event I co-hosted with Susan Ragusa, Founder of Cause and Event. Beacon is only an hour outside of NYC along the Hudson River and is absolutely beautiful. The city is home to many talented and amazing artists that have galleries not only in Beacon but in Manhattan as well. So the choice to host a clothing swap event there felt right and it turned out to be a wonderful and fun time. And more importantly, the event was both economically appealing and environmentally friendly for all.

Women were lined up at the door anxiously waiting to get in and begin their shopping and the best part; it was guilt free shopping! Swappers were able to walk away with a new wardrobe and not have to invest a dime. For me, it was great to be able to work with so many women at one time and provide them with insight into how to best shop and dress for their silhouette and coloring.

Next stop on The Frock Swap Road show is in my hometown, Manhattan. I look forward to watching the enthusiasm that was so apparent with our Beacon Swappers.

Size does not matter....

I recently completed my seasonal ritual; switching over from my winter wardrobe to my spring wardrobe. During this time I take inventory of items I need for the new season and then take that list with me when I go shopping. Armed with my list I walked to my favorite store, Lord and Taylor on Fifth Avenue and was elated to find on display such bold, bright and beautiful fashion items. Coming out of the doldrums of a cold New York winter, this was incredibly refreshing!

After trying on multiple items I made my way to the cashier desk and realized that in my hand I had an array of sizes ranging from a size 0 to size 4. I’ve been fairly true to my size since high school with very little deviation in weight but of course through the years, things have “shifted” a bit but I tell myself that this is the beauty of life. I thought back to when I attended classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology and a former teacher talked about the lack of standardized sizing for women as evidenced by the fact that for every US size, there is approximately more than 12 variations in that size and this does not take into account the variations in color dyes which can alter the size (some shrinkage can take place). So if you take this number into consideration along with the plethora of designers out there you will begin to realize that the confusion as to what size you really are is absolutely valid. Now that you know this tidbit of information, the next time you go shopping do not shop for that single size you think you are, shop in a size range and focus on the fit. This concept is quite liberating!

2009 Spring Trends for Women

Three weeks and counting down to a cheerful and sunny spring season! It seems so far off but I promise its right around the corner. To help pass some of the time until we are officially in spring, here are a few tips and trends to help prepare you for the season’s newest looks.

Before you head to the stores to start purchasing your new spring items, clear and clean out your closet to better understand what you REALLY need this season. Once you know what you need, make a list and be sure to take it with you when you head to the stores so you can shop efficiently and effectively.

Here are the hottest trends for this season:

Denim and Trousers
I think Katie Holmes started this trend when she stepped out in Manhattan wearing her “boyfriend” jeans (baggy and rolled at hem) paired with a cardigan and tee-shirt so denim designers followed suit. For the trouser pant, look for a relaxed and roomy silhouette (i.e., wide leg or draw string) with the focus on the waist. If you opt for the wide leg, roomy pant or boyfriend jean, be sure to pair them with a fitted top in order to show off your female curves.

Tops & Vests
Ruffles, sheers and one shouldered tops are the rage this spring. However, I caution women to be careful with the sheer look. I recommend you save this trend for evening looks as it’s not appropriate for office attire. A great office look that is both chic and acceptable is a silk ruffle top paired with a skirt or pant suit. The ruffle blouse is a great way to show off your feminine side! Vests are still going strong for this season and a great way to look chic and modern is to pair the vest with a fitted t-shirt and your boyfriend jeans.

Dresses and Skirts
Fortunately shirt dresses are still “in” this spring so if you purchased one last year, you’re already ahead of the trend. However, the newest twist on the shirt dress is the availability of the dress in metallic colors. Full skirts are also “in” this season with satin and silk being the choice of fabrics. Opting for a full skirt in patterns or floral prints will have you on the cutting edge of fashion this season!

Blazers
The “boyfriend” trend shows up in the blazer cut this season so look for a roomier fit that will allow you to roll up the sleeves and look chic. Be sure to pair this blazer with a more fitted pant vs. the roomier and relaxed pant mentioned so you keep your body shape in proportion.

Spring Coat
I typically don’t like to categorize the “trench” as a trend because this is a timeless wardrobe piece and should be a staple in your closet. However, this season, you will see the trench in various bright colors instead of the typical beige color you often see. Additionally, the waist is a big focus for spring so a great way to combine both trends is to pair your favorite belt with the trench.

Footwear
The pointy-toe pump made a comeback last year and will stick around this spring. I’m personally quite happy about this since I’m petite in stature so the pointy-toe is always a better option for me because it’s elongates me. Of course high heel chunky wedges are also a must have this spring.

Accessories
Accessories range from big and bold to elegant and sophisticated. Big and bold jewelry can be paired with the exotic print trend while the elegant and sophisticated jewelry will compliment the sheer trend. Metallics are still popular for this season so if you want to incorporate this trend inexpensively, opt for a cute clutch or handbag. Additionally, you can incorporate the ruffle trend in a scarf as pictured below.

The "It" Colors
All things bright this season! As we emerge from a long, dreary winter season, the “it” colors represent optimism with a strong showing of bright pink, yellow and green and all colors in between.

Prints and Patterns
You will see lots of tribal, animal and floral prints this season on everything from shoes and tops to dresses and skirts. Graphic patterns are also the rage this season.

Shop your shelves

With an unemployment rate of 7.2% for the month of December (2008)¹ and rising, the thought of heading to a retail store to purchase a new spring wardrobe does not seem realistic or attainable. Don’t be discouraged as help is here! I assure you that you won’t even need to leave your home and more importantly spend a dime to achieve new wardrobe combinations. How? By shopping your own closet and shelves!

I know this concept seems easy in theory but how can one actually put into practice. After working with many clients to do just this, I’ve put together a few guidelines to help you shop your closet and shelves more effectively and with more confidence.

1. Clean out your closet – take out all apparel and accessories and be prepared to literally clean the closet. Dust the shelves and clean the floors. This not only gives you the opportunity to put your clothes back in a nice clean environment but it helps you to see what your wardrobe consists of.

2. Eliminate pieces that you know you will never wear again. If you are unsure about certain items ask yourself a few questions:

- “When did I wear last?" Over 1 year eliminate it from your wardrobe.
- “Can this item be tailored?” If no, eliminate it from your wardrobe.
- “Is the item worn out?” If yes, eliminate it.
- “Do I love it?” If no, eliminate it.
- “Is the item age appropriate? If no, eliminate it.

3. Categorize your wardrobe – all skirts together, trousers, dresses, blouses, scarves, handbags, etc.

4. Separate your suits – if you have a pant suit, place the blazer within your blazer category and the pant with the pants category. This helps you to optimize your wardrobe by mixing your suit pieces.

5. Coordinate like colors – all black sweaters stay together, all winter white blazers sit next together, etc. Always go from light to dark when coordinating your colors.

6. Read up on the fashion trends to better understand the “in” colors and patterns, dresses, pants, tops, etc. for that season. This will help you start to put together new winning and modern combinations.

7. Replicate outfits by checking out sites such as Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, J Crew, Bloomingdales, Saks, Lord and Taylor, etc. These websites are a great tool to help you pair your pieces together with confidence.

What Not to Wear to an Inaugural Ceremony

Yes, I dare to differ in my opinion regarding Michelle Obama’s dress choice for today’s Presidential Inauguration ceremony. While a majority of the population was in awe of Mrs. Obama's gold sheath dress and coat, I was not.

First, not only did the color not photograph well but it wasn’t the optimal skin tone enhancer either. Secondly, the fit was off and as a result gave her a boxy looking silhouette. Lastly, the heavy lace brocade fabric on both the coat and sheath aged her a bit. Perhaps the outfit would have worked better if she opted to break up the two pieces and pair the dress with a solid darker color coat in a different textured fabric.

Revisiting Appropriate Office Attire, Finally!

In recent articles titled, Designers sober up with chic office wear and The wardrobe of TV’s career women both talk about how the economic climate is impacting what women wear to the office. Muted colors, minimal jewelry, and sensible heels are in and everything else is out. Now while I agree with what is considered in, I disagree with the implication that these ideas were ever “out.”

As an Image consultant, I work with many executives and regardless of the industry they work in; I always urge them to air on the conservative side in their wardrobe selections. My general rule is that anything you would wear on a weekend evening out, should be avoided in the workplace. Why? Because studies show that an opinion is formed about an individual within 7 seconds of a meeting so within the confines of an office environment, it’s critical to project (within those 7 seconds) a polished and professional image.

1. Tracksuits or other work-out type outfits - just because your firm participates in casual Fridays doesn't mean they are suggesting you come in looking THAT casual!

2. Flip-flops, sneakers, open toe strappy sandals, stilettos and for all you croc loving folks, please leave these at home!

3. Visible art and body piercings - while I believe in self-expression, it's better kept for after work hours.

4. Plunging and revealing necklines (no cleavage should be showing), no midriff tops and finally, no tank tops, camisoles or any other shoulder or back revealing tops.

5. Mini-skirts, yes even with a pair of tights.

6. Excessive, Glittery Jewelry - statement necklaces (all the rage now) should be kept for weekend looks. However, if you are in a creative industry, this could be considered appropriate if not overly done. Additionally, avoid large dangling earrings and bangles. The point here is to never allow your accessories to distract from what you are saying.

7. Excessive make-up - keep the smoky eye for the weekend.

8. Fishnet stockings - even if Vogue deems them as a critical addition to your wardrobe, please keep them for the weekend.

9. Ill-fitting anything - nothing screams "I don't care about my look" more than an ill fitting jacket, pants, top or outerwear. The best investment in your wardrobe is a good tailor.

10. Barely dry hair and unkempt facial hair - I'm often sitting on the subway in the morning and notice so many women with damp hair heading to work. It's not just that it's damp, but the look is completely disheveled. Take a few more minutes and dry your hair completely! You never know who you will run into first thing in the morning. Additionally, men sporting a mustache or beard, please be sure to keep it well groomed.

So before you leave for the office in the morning, check to see if you are projecting a polished and professional look. If not, take a few more minutes to ensure you get it right.

Happy New Year Everyone!

While the economy and dreary weather (well at least for those of us who live on the East Coast) has us all feeling a bit gloomy, this year vow to inject a bit more color into your wardrobe to help elevate your mood. Many of you have probably noticed the plethora of vibrant colors debuting for Spring 2009 and that is a direct result of the current economic situation.

Wearing color evokes a myriad of emotions and reactions. Wearing the color blue projects an image of professionalism, loyalty, and honor while red projects boldness, excitement, and creativity. Every color on the color wheel has a specific meaning and when worn correctly can be quite effective in achieving a positive outcome of any situation. So why is it that so many of us are afraid to add color in our wardrobe? When I go through a client’s closet, I’m often surprised at the lack of color I find. While I’m a big fan of neutrals as a building block to a good wardrobe, color is a great way to inject life and personality into your every day look.

I recently attended an evening business function that was held at the Friar’s Club in NYC. While I chose to wear an appropriate and professional red dress, the rest of the female attendees wore mainly black suits. During the event, a number of attendees approached me and complimented me on my clothing choice and indicated that since the event was held in the evening at such a legendary venue, they assumed a darker color choice would be more acceptable. Since when does evening equate to wearing black? Perhaps the misconception comes from the Black Tie request of an invitation. To help clarify, Black Tie simply means that one is requesting formal attire. For men, this means donning a tuxedo where women can wear either a cocktail or full length gown. The color choice is not restricted to black.

So the next time you are invited to an event whether it be a formal event, business function or any other gathering, opt to wear a color that will flatter your skin tone. You will feel confident and vibrant and most assuredly will stand out in the crowd!

Is the Art of Dressing Up, Over?

Recently my husband and I spent Thanksgiving with his relatives that reside in New Hampshire. While there, we were fortunate enough to spend a lovely night in the beautiful and historic Marriott Wentworth By The Sea. The hotel offers an incredible Thanksgiving dinner for families so I wasn’t surprised to see a lot of children and their parents. I was however, surprised to see how many of these guests dressed in what I would consider not even appropriate for a trip to the gym!

After the Thanksgiving festivities were over, my husband and I went back to the hotel for a night cap in the beautiful lounge area of the hotel. It was still early so there were lots of families and kids walking through the lounge area while we sipped our cocktail. I did not see one dress on any of the young girls walking by, not one sweater vest or tie combo on the boys (remember those cute boy outfits). The parents dressed their children as if it was just another Thursday. A more disturbing sight was a woman who was in need of ice cubes that decided it was acceptable to walk through the hallways, down to the lobby and through the lounge in her full length flannel night and BLACK socks to fill up her ice bucket?!

I remember when I was younger and the holidays were upon us, the “occasion” attire came out of the closets and it was not a discussion or debate as to whether or not I (or my siblings) would dress up. We dressed up. While I might not have approved of this tradition at the time, I now have a greater appreciation for the fact that my parents provided me with the knowledge of making the distinction between every day attire and special occasion attire. Today, many people don’t recognize the distinction and perhaps that’s due to society’s more relaxed and comfort minded approach to dressing.

It is really important to understand that when one dresses up, one feels like a million dollars. You stand up straight, you feel more confident and more importantly, you feel good about yourself.

7 Tips to Recession-Proof Your Wardrobe

In light of the recent DOW Jones plunge of 10,000 points, it is our responsibility to hunker down and evaluate how we can rebuild our savings and retirement plans. Clearly we need to prioritize our spending allocations to ensure we can stretch the dollar even further.

While statistics vary depending on the source, on average Americans spend at least 1/3 of their disposable income on their wardrobes. So it's not a surprise that during this economic downturn, many people will look to cut spending in this area. This does not equate to looking less polished than before, it just means you need to be smarter and more creative about your wardrobe choices.

Here are a few tips that will keep you looking polished and professional without sacrificing your savings account.

1. 20% of the clothes in your wardrobe are worn 80% of the time, so switch this statistic and start wearing the other 80% that has been lying dormant in your closet. It will not only preserve your favorite pieces that you've been wearing repeatedly but also give you new options to wear.

2. Streamline your wardrobe and donate those articles of clothing you know you will never wear again. This will help you see more clearly those items you forgot you had because you couldn't see everything.

3. Mix up your suits and use each piece as a separate ensemble. Many people view a suit as a single clothing option. I always have my clients separate the suit and hang each piece individually. For men, pair your suit jacket with jeans for a more casual weekend look. For women, pair your suit bottom with a sweater and a different textured type of jacket (i.e., leather or corduroy blazer).

4. Borrow or swap clothing and accessories with family or friends. This helps to "inject" new pieces into your wardrobe without spending any money.

5. Take footwear to get polished and if necessary resoled. It is less expensive to get your shoes/boots fixed up than to go out and buy a new pair.

6. Invest in new accessories (scarves, ties, handbags, etc.) in the newest trends or colors to help keep you current and modern looking. Purchasing a few new accessories is less expensive than investing in a whole new outfit.

7. Care for your fabrics so that you can get the most use out of them. Don't feel the need to take everything to the dry cleaners all the time. Many of the dry cleaning solutions break down the fabrics quickly. Instead, opt for hand washing using eco friendly soaps.

Remember, it is essential to present your best self in all life's endeavors so even though we are facing challenging times, don't feel you need to neglect your best self :)

Differentiation: The Key to Getting Hired

New York Unemployment rate reached 5.8% in August and this figure does not even take into account the recent Wall Street woes. This economic downturn has propelled many people into the job search arena. For many, the thought of interviewing is overwhelming and intimidating. The simple truth is that if you don't prepare properly, you won't do well. And it's not just about preparing properly, it's about differentiating yourself amongst the many individuals you will be competing against to secure the job.

Here are a few guidelines that will help differentiate you before, during and after the interviewing process.

The Prep

Research, Research and Research
I cannot stress how important this component is to a successful interviewing strategy. Yes, we all know the importance and need to do our homework in regards to researching the company itself but there are two areas that many candidates forget to take into consideration; the interviewer(s) and the competitive landscape. Familiarize yourself with all three areas and you will differentiate yourself amongst the many other candidates vying for the same job opportunity.

- Company Information -check out the company's website, recent press releases and other current information. Resources such as Skyminder and Wolff Worldwide can provide tremendous insight into a company's profile and financials. Moreover, talk to individuals working in the industry and get their perspective on the company's strengths, challenges and culture.

- Competitive Landscape - use business resources to understand the competitive landscape. Visit Hoovers and learn how competitors differ in their business strategy and positioning of products and services.

- Garner Information on Interviewer(s)- I compare this concept to developing a successful marketing campaign. Marketers must understand the demographics and psychographics of their target audience in order to craft a relevant and compelling message. Applying the same strategy to interviewing will help you communicate your message more effectively. Fortunately we have a access to a plethora of information at our fingertips. Google your interviewer(s) and obtain as much professional information as you can. Check out their profiles on business networking sites such as Linked In or Plaxo and review their career path, accomplishments and associations they belong to. Moreover, you should reach out to mutual contacts to better understand what the interviewer is looking for or how they run their departments.

The Interview
Keep in mind that the interview is a two way street and as important as it is to a company to select the right candidate, it is equally important for you to ensure the company is the right place for you.

- Attire - be sure to select the appropriate business suit for the interview. For men, this includes a dark suit, dress shirt and tie and laced up shoes. For women, a skirt or pant suit with blouse or sweater and pump (2 -2 1/2") is appropriate. Cologne and Perfume should be kept at a minimum or not worn at all. Too much of a scent is distracting.

Be aware of your body language
- Have a strong hand-shake
- Maintain good eye contact at all times
- Remember to smile
- Maintain good posture (slouching translates into "I'm not interested")
- Keep arms open (crossed arms depict defiance)

- Asking the right questions - we have all been on interviews where we are inevitably asked "So, do you have any questions for me?" Here is where all your research will pay off. Change the "interview" scenario to a "conversation" scenario. Too often, interviews begin to take on an inquisition feel because the interviewer and candidate are just trying to get through the process as quickly and painlessly as possible. You as the candidate should take the initiative to change that. Begin an interesting dialogue with the interviewer about the current company opportunities and challenges and where you feel your skills can be applied. Ask questions regarding the competitors you have researched and offer your perspective or insight. Providing value and key insights will set you apart.

The Follow-Up
Timing is everything. Be sure to send a Thank You letter immediately following the interview. Email and handwritten letters are both acceptable formats.

In the follow up letter be sure to summarize the challenges and opportunities discussed during the interview and clearly articulate how your skills and expertise can be applied to these areas. Remember, always be relevant, articulate and on point. Lastly, include a specified time line on when you will follow up in order to check on the status of the job opportunity.

Here's the Skinny on 2008 Fall Trends for Women

The summer season has officially ended and my favorite season has begun! Why is this my favorite season? Because the fall is "The Accessory" season. I love to layer looks when dressing so the fall provides so many clothing and accessory options to accomplish just that.

Depending on the magazine, newspaper or website you refer to, each media outlet has their interpretation of the fall season and it becomes confusing to follow and understand what to invest in and how to incorporate them into your existing wardrobe. No worries. Below is a list of the current fall trends with a few suggestions on how to wear them.

The Trouser
Wide leg trousers and denim jeans with high waists are in.

The Blouse
Think feminine; ruffles, bows and soft "flowy" fabrics. These styles look ideal with the high waist trouser pant and it creates the perfect feminine silhouette.

The Dress
Dresses are making a big comeback this season particularly the knit dress. However, I caution women here that if you want to purchase this style, be sure to invest in the proper undergarments as this fabric is unforgiving. Don't be discouraged though as this is just one of many dress styles that are in. Similar to the spring trend, the shirt dress is back for this season and fortunately this style is one that looks great on all women.

The Blazer
Short and tailored are the "in" looks for fall. The tailored blazer looks especially great when paired with the wide-leg trouser pant.

The Coat
When the cool weather sets in, make sure you cover up with a unique, interesting and of course warm coat. No need to stick to with the basic coat this season. Instead opt for one of the many styles being shown this season that have details such as wide arms, large dramatic hoods, big belts and unusually large collars. Also, don't be afraid to select a coat with great color (purple, grey or wine) and/or a great print.

The Footwear
- The shoe-bootie is huge this season and since I'm petite in stature (5' tall), I'm excited to see the heel reaching new heights (3"+)

- The riding boot - many women happily embraced the ballet slipper this summer so the flat riding boot is a nice transition into the cooler and more covered up season. This is a great way to look polished and put together in a more casual and comfortable way. The riding boot paired with leggings or textured hose (fall trend) and a sweater dress (fall trend) is a chic way to incorporate all three trends!

The Accessories
It's all about being big and bold this season.

- Scarves - large graphic and colorful prints
- Handbag - the Satchel (in bold colors)
- Belts - back in a big way and being used on everything (coats, blouses, knit dresses, etc.)
- Textured tights and hose - looks great when paired with the shoe-bootie
- Jewelry

My Top Ten Must Have Wardrobe Pieces

I’m often asked about essential clothing or accessory items I deem important in building a versatile wardrobe so I've compiled my "must have" list to help you shop smarter.

Black Trouser
This is an area where I recommend clients investing in since this item never goes out of style and you will have for a long time.

Fitted Fashion Blazer
This is where you can have a little fun with your wardrobe and insert your personal style with a fitted (no droopy shoulders, sleeves too long, etc.) blazer. To define “fashion” blazer a bit further, I would look for details like stitching, zippers, interesting buttons, etc.

Pant Suit or Skirt Suit (Neutral Colors)
Depending on your level of comfort, opt for either a pant or skirt suit in a neutral color (black, brown, beige, gray, etc.). This allows you to mix and match the pieces with other wardrobe choices. For example, you can pair the suit bottom with a white blouse and a color scarf (items on my top ten list) or pair the suit jacket with the dark denim pant and cashmere sweater giving a complete and polished look.

White Blouse
The Non-Iron wrinkle free blouse at Brooks Brothers is a must have. I recently tested just how “wrinkle free” this blouse really is and I must say I am quite impressed. It traveled really well and I did not have to iron it during my trip.

Neutral Colored Pump
It’s important to have a pair of pumps that you can wear with any wardrobe piece so this is another area I encourage clients to invest in.

Cashmere Sweater (Color)
There are so many research reports that talk about the positive response people have towards color so when it comes to buying this item, opt for a color that enhances your skin tone.

Dark Wash Denim Pant
I state the term “dark wash” here because I feel the darker denim is more versatile and looks more polished vs. a lighter wash. You can pair this item with the fitted fashion blazer or pair with a white blouse and colored scarf to inject a pop of color.

Car Coat
I know many would argue that instead of this type of coat, I should have included a trench. While I do believe that the trench is an important part of any wardrobe, I think a car coat gives you the ability to express your personality and unique style more than the trench.

Wrap Dress
Diane Von Furstenberg is a successful women’s designer because she understands the female silhouette. She also understands how to enhance that silhouette by wearing the correct fabrics as well as the appropriate cut hence the success of the “Wrap Dress.” Every woman should have this in their wardrobe. I’ve never seen a woman look bad wrap dress!

Colored Silk Scarf
You cannot open up a magazine today without seeing a celebrity draped in a scarf. I have always loved scarves because I feel they add so much to an outfit; color, “chic-ness” and visual interest.

Fit and Flair

You don’t have to be on the cutting edge of fashion trends to be considered someone with panache or what I call, “flair.” For me, “flair” is easily accomplished by what is usually neglected by many and that is the proper fit of a garment. If you get the fit right, you too can look like you walked off a runway.

If you have traveled to Europe or perused through European magazines or websites, you notice how chic and polished individuals look. Why? The reason is that they invest in timeless wardrobe pieces and ensure their garment is fitted properly.

I am not one to follow every trend every season. I am petite in stature so it’s difficult for me to translate these trends into my wardrobe since most designers either don’t manufacture petites or if they do, they don’t do it well. So at a very young age, I started taking my clothes to a tailor. I used to envy my friends that could go shopping and pick up a fabulous outfit and wear it that same evening! I on the other hand had to wait until 1. I had time to take it to get altered and then 2. Wait for the alterations to be completed. On the positive side, I quickly learned the art of proper fit and how it helps to define your style.

Just having a garment fit you correctly is already setting you apart from everyone else!

Travel Light, Travel Chic

With airlines trying to identify new revenue streams to sustain their business, they are now charging for checked luggage bags. American Airlines recently published their fees for checked bags which will cost a traveler $15 for a single checked bag and $25 for the second. Moreover, bags weighing between 70 lbs–100 lbs will cost a traveler $50 per bag! * So how does the traveler avoid paying such fees? The answer is to pack all you need in a carry on. While this seems to be an easy solution, it’s one that most travelers find difficult to accomplish.

When I took my first business trip it was to Cologne, Germany for approximately five weeks. During the five weeks, I visited various cities and moved to different hotels. Not having much experience in packing, I basically packed everything I owned in two HUGE suitcases. Having to schlep these suitcases with me through numerous cities, proved to be a great learning experience for my future travel endeavors. I now only bring a small Pullman that can be placed in the overhead compartment of any aircraft, domestic or international. I pack the same quantity of items whether I’m going away for one week or three.

Here are a few tips to help you travel light and look chic wherever you go.

- Keep your wardrobe choices to a single color palette as this will eliminate the need to pack multiple items in various colors (i.e., shoes, handbags, accessories)

- Remember to follow the TSA guidelines for all your toiletry needs. This complete travel kit is great for domestic and international travel and will ensure you make it through security effortlessly.

- For women, dresses are a great way to travel light and chic. Dresses are a single item (not taking up much space in your bag) and can be accessorized to either dress them up or dress them down.

- Layer, Layer Layer! Layering your travel wardrobe helps to leverage each piece for a longer period of time.

- Wear one of your outfits or pieces of an outfit on the plane. You are not running a marathon so the pieces will not get dirty and a result they can be worn again.

- Accessories are a great way to instantly change an outfit from day to evening so one dress turns into two different outfits. Since accessories are relatively small, they will take up less room in your luggage.

Most travelers don’t spend a lot of time thinking about their travel wardrobe and as a result, they over pack. The “thinking” aspect of packing is the most time consuming component but if you incorporate the above tips into your thought process, you will be able to avoid having to check your luggage and still have a complete wardrobe for your trip.

Spring is in the Air!

It’s that time of year again when we bid adieu to our dreary winter clothes and bring out the spring wardrobe. I always look forward to the Winter/Spring switch over ritual as it signals the warmer weather is on its way and there is a renewed sense of freshness in the air.

Once I switch over to spring, I take inventory of new items needed in order to update or replenish my wardrobe. This is where the fun really begins; shopping! Not everyone enjoys the shopping aspect the way I do. Many of my clients cringe at that the thought of having to do seasonal or occasion shopping. With so many new trends to follow and incorporate into their existing wardrobe, they find the process not only overwhelming but confusing.

For those of you who are like my clients and dislike the idea of shopping or trying to understand the latest seasonal trends, here are the top women and men spring trends along with a few suggestions on how to incorporate them into your wardrobe.

2008 Spring Trends for Women

Bold Colors
From beautiful saturated colors to neon, this trend is extremely popular this season. No need to dress head to toe in these colors but instead incorporate a punch of color into your neutral outfit through colorful shoes, handbags, scarves or jewelry.

Shirtdresses
This dress is very flattering on all body shapes so get ready to put your best shape forward.

New Neutrals
Neutrals are being redefined this season with colors ranging from stone to blush to earth tones. A khaki colored blazer paired with a muted rose color top would be a great way to embrace this trend.

Metallics
Gold, silver and of course bronze fit into this category but this season embrace the new gleaming type colors (e.g. fuschia)

Florals
Flirty and feminine floral prints are making a big appearance this season. If you are hesitant about floral opt for a smaller print floral or incorporate accessories like a nice floral shoe to accent your outfit.

Graphic Prints
Global inspired prints are the rage this season. Much of the graphic prints reflect cultures from around the world. Be careful to not overwhelm your body shape will a graphic print that is too large. The size of the print should be comparable to the size of your frame.

Patent Leather
No, this trend doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy patent leather pants but instead update your wardrobe with big bold patent accessories: clutch, bangles, and shoes.

Gladiator Sandals
Yes, the gladiator sandals are making another appearance this season. To soften the gladiator look pair these sandals with one of the season’s pretty floral print dresses.

Full Skirts
Many women feel they can’t wear the full skirt because it might be overwhelming to their frame or there is the off chance it might look a bit dowdy. Keep in mind, it’s all about balancing out your appearance so when wearing the full skirt, pair it with a slimmer top or wear a belt at your waist to create an hour glass silhouette.

Going Green (not just the color)
Many designers are launching new eco friendly clothing and accessory lines to help protect our environment.

2008 Spring Trends for Men

Pretty in Pink
Pink is not a “women’s only” color and it happens to look great on men. While many women opt for bolder pinks, men can wear the more muted pinks and look fashion forward for spring.

Plaid
Stay away from the all plaid suit. Instead opt for a plaid shirt paired with a neutral trouser or a plaid short paired with a neutral shirt.

Biker Jackets
If you are working in the corporate world, I don’t suggest strutting into the office with this new trend but instead tap into your creative style on the weekend and pair it with a great pair of jeans.

Patent Leather
Similar to women’s spring trends, this too is a trend for men. While I’m not a big fan of patent leather pants on men, that’s not to say some cannot pull it off. If you’re that guy, go for it. If not, ignore this trend.

Remember, just because the fashion industry is dictating what the trends are for men and women, doesn’t mean you have to follow each trend. Define your own personal style buy incorporating an aspect of the trend that suits your body shape and coloring.

Mind Your Cell Phone Manners

A recent study conducted by Harris Interactive shows that 1 in 7 adults have given up their landlines entirely and are embracing a "cell phone only" method of communication. With a majority of the U.S. population conducting conversations only on their cell phone, what are the guidelines for appropriate use? Although there has been much written about cell phone etiquette, I am not quite sure how many users are actually paying attention to the do’s and don’ts of appropriate use.

Last week I had lunch with former colleagues in a respectable and upscale restaurant where other patrons were quietly having “business type” conversations. A few tables away sat two gentlemen that apparently thought they were conducting business in their own private office because not only were they unnecessarily loud but one gentlemen kept his ring tone on volume 10 (10 being max). We have all been in situations where we forget to turn off our phones, so I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until I watched him slowly reach for the phone and then leisurely look at his screen to determine if the number was familiar to him, I then became irritated. This happened a number of times during our lunch and finally my colleague asked him to please turn off the ringer or put on vibrate. I couldn't understand whether this gentleman was completely unaware of how disruptive this was to the other patrons or he really did not care. I think it’s safe to say he did not care since he left his phone on volume 10 and could be heard as we were walking out of the restaurant.

I had another cell phone incident happen the other day while standing on line at Duane Reed. A woman in front of me was having her items rung up when she decided to take a phone call from a friend. I can only assume it was her friend because they began to chat about a recipe she was going to try out that evening. In any event, the woman was unable to multi task (pay for items and chat at the same time) and as a result, a long line began to form. I was shocked at how unaware she was of her surroundings. I finally asked her nicely to please finish her conversation as she was holding up a long line of people.

I think it’s great that so many people are embracing technology and taking full advantage of this incredible invention we call the cell phone. However, let’s remember that we are not sitting in the comfort of our own home chatting away with Aunt Betty.

So the next time you reach for your cell phone in a public area, please remember a few rules of etiquette as it will make everyone around you a lot happier.

- Avoid conversations in public areas such as restaurants, places of worship, dentist and doctor waiting areas, buses or subways, libraries or any other enclosed type area.

- Not only adjust your ringer volume, but adjust your "voice" volume. You might be in a high traffic area but that does not mean the person on the other line is. No need to shout!

- Place your phone on vibrant and never look at your screen while in a business meeting or interview. If there is something urgent you are waiting for then state that up front in order to manage everyone’s expectations.

- Never put your phone on speaker in a public area. I was once subjected to a 30 minute conversation about bed linens while in a department store because a woman decided she could no longer hold her phone up to her ear.

Case Closed!

Could a case really be determined by the jury’s body language? Studies show that during interpersonal communication, 93% is non-verbally transmitted making a strong case that body language can in fact determine the outcome of a trial.

Recently I received a jury summons in the mail and showed up downtown assuming I would be dismissed after day 2. I was wrong. I was selected to be on a case. The lawyers noted that the case could last as long as 7 days. Yikes, this was going to be a very long week!

During the jury selection process you have a ton of time to do nothing. Yes you can work on your laptop (they do have wireless) but it’s not the ideal venue to set up a workstation. For me, it was difficult to concentrate so instead I just scanned the room participating in my favorite pastime, people watching! I know we live in a more casual society today but my fellow jurors took “casual” to a whole new level. One woman wore what I think was her pajama bottoms, another had low rise jeans paired with a very short top which exposed her belly button ring and a number of men wore tracksuits! I understand that the first day of jury duty is spent sitting around in somewhat uncomfortable chairs but we are not at home folks! Other people see you and interact with you and to be honest, I’m not comfortable speaking with someone I don’t know in his/her pajamas. I have always stated that it is essential to present your best self in all life’s endeavors and yes that does include jury duty.

As I stated earlier, I was indeed selected for a case and told to show up in court promptly the next morning. After the horror settled in that I would now have to work through the evening to get my "paid" work done, I was somewhat eager to participate in a trial since I had never done so before. Although this was a civil case vs. a criminal case and not as exciting, it did prove to be an interesting experience.

After day two, the case was not going well for the plaintiff at all. Her lawyer was inept and the case began to take on somewhat of a comedy act. I could not imagine 5 more days of this scenario. However, after lunch on Day 3 we were brought back to the court room and told the case was just settled! The judge explained why this is done and inferred that body language is often factored into the decision. She furthered noted that the lawyers watch to see how we react to certain evidence, witnesses or even the lawyer. I thought this was fascinating as I coach clients on body language and how important it is when interacting with people personally and professionally.

The judge did not get into the specifics of our body language and what the lawyers did take into account but I can only surmise that it could have been one or a combination of the following:

Defensive and rejection postures include:
- folded arms (lots of folded arms)
- crossed legs (many of my fellow jurors including myself had our legs crossed)
- body turned away from speaker (in this case it was the plaintiff’s lawyer)

Incredulity or amazement postures include:
- rolling eyes (amazed at how inept the plaintiff's lawyer was)

Change is Good, Right?

How often have you heard the saying, “change is good?” And when you do, how often do you really believe it? Change invariably brings on a series of expected and unexpected events so it’s not a surprise that we experience a bit of trepidation regarding the “unexpected” events. However, it’s these unexpected events that more often than not, bring about the most interesting and surprising changes we thought possible.

Being an Image and Style professional, I get to witness first hand how change (small or large) can impact one’s life. By the time I finish going through a client’s wardrobe and help them identify their distinct style personality as well as their ideal color palette, their body language changes; they stand taller, they exude more confidence and most importantly, they are smiling from ear to ear.

After following up with my clients they tell me how amazed they were at the initial reactions they received from their colleagues, friends or family. One client was called into her manager’s office where she was thanked for setting such a wonderful example for the rest of her team. Another client told me he couldn’t believe he waited so long to make the change because he didn’t realize it would bring about so many new personal and professional opportunities.

We are all creatures of habit. We like the security and comfort our routines bring us but unfortunately that can also lead to a predictable existence. If you feel as if you are walking down that path, ask yourself if you are presenting your “best” self in all life’s endeavors and if the answer is no, perhaps it’s time for a change. Who knows what could happen….
